From September 7-9, the region’s best ran, jumped and pushed themselves at Sydney Olympic Park.
Duval High's Stuart Geddes has had a rough run over the past few months battling injury but even at a reduced capacity was still good enough to win the bronze medal in the 17+ 2000m steeplechase. Geddes came back out for the 16yrs 1500m late and finished in eighth place.
Duval High's Turner Lynch had a busy program which started with a 400m and 800m heat on the same day, only two hours apart but he managed qualify for the finals in both events. The first final run was the 800m, where he ran fourth. Lynch's time of 2:04.18 was still a personal best. On the final day, Lynch had to rebound from that setback and run the 400m final on tired legs. From an inside lane, Lynch clocked up another solid run of 53.39, to place fifth overall.
Armidale High's Henry Sindel ran two new events for the first time at this level. Sindel began his meet with the 3000m event and finished in fifth place. The time is a national’s qualifier.
Sindel also took his place in the 17+ boys steeplechase field alongside training partners Campion and Geddes. For a first go at higher steeplers, Sindel finished in sixth place as the youngest athlete in the field.
Milly Mazzei from Armidale High, competed in the T20 Para 12-15yrs division, ran a strong 200m of 33.91 to place fifth based on percentage. In the 100m on the final day of competition, Mazzei ran 16.08 to place ninth overall. Both times were under the national qualifying standards.
Another Armidale High Athlete, Isabela Gooch raced in the 13yrs 800m event at her first CHS championships. She made it through to the following days final, where she placed sixth.
William Vince-Moin was also competing at CHS for the first time, after a big block of winter training he was ready to see what he could do in the T20 Para 17+ boys 800m event. He placed seventh overall. In other events, Vince-Moin also achieved the nationals qualifying standard in the 200m and he competed in the javelin, placing 10th.
Duval's Marvin Palad raced in the competitive 14yrs 100m and 200m sprints, making it through to the 100m final, and narrowly missing out in the 200m. Palad ran personal bests every time he stepped onto the track, and placed 9th overall in the 100m final, breaking the 12 second barrier, running 11.98. In the 200m, Palad's PB run was 24.12 seconds.
Armidale High's Taibtha Peterson competed in three field events in the 12yrs division, where she placed ninth in discus, 11th in the shot put and 17th in the long jump.
