Punsand Bay is a short drive to the tip of Australia and part of a great Aussie adventure.
It’s a 4000km journey from Armidale. You pass Cape Tribulation travelling along the Bloomfield Track toward Australia’s most northern tip.
If you took a census and you could be assured of completing it, I would say that Cape York is a journey worth taking. The rewards just come with going the distance: blue fin tuna, giant trevally, crocodile sightings, bird life, ant hills, river crossings and unusual and interesting fellow traveller are but a few of this trips favourite things.
Now this may sound more like an article for a holiday magazine than one for “Faith Matters”, but the difference distance can make to all sorts of things is important.
Distance from work can be helpful and – from minus eight temperatures – delightful. But not all distance is helpful or delightful. Father’s Day is a reminder that distance can be devastating for either parent or child.
Distance in a marriage can be a suffering love or even its end. And death? Well death is a distance that grief never seems to overcome. Crucial to all is the distance between a person and God.
There are a whole lot worse places to be stuck than on a track in Northern Queensland and life was never meant to be a journey made without God. Perhaps it is a corny way of putting it, but Jesus Christ is the rescue winch to pull us out of the “slough of despond”, as described in Pilgrim’s Progress.
Oh what a difference distance can make. Closer to God may bring reconciliation with your children, teach you to again love your spouse, discover an honesty and kindness and gentle up-building speech that left you when the distance between you God increased.
Oh what a difference closeness can make! Forgiveness, wisdom and hope. Distance may be great on a holiday, but even on holiday closeness to Jesus is an essential.
