HealthWISE Armidale gathered together 25 Aboriginal community member to form ‘Mission Slim Possible’.
The team trained three times a week at PCYC for 10 weeks.
And while the group said shedding some pounds was important, their main goal was to raise awareness of preventable chronic diseases in Aboriginal people.
Team member Tom Faulkner said they were trying to change the lifestyles of Aboriginal people.
“Heart disease and diabetes are a big problem for Aboriginal people,” he said.
“We’re trying to get people to think about their weight loss as 20 percent from their workout and 80 per cent at home in the kitchen.”
Their hard work paid off scoring second place in the NSW State Knockout George Rose Challenge, losing 96.7kg in total. Not content to rest, the group have already started on their next challenge and hope to go one better next time.
