A sign on Bendemeer Road, Bundarra pointing in the direction of the cemetery is missing an “e”, and reads “cemetry”.
Council’s heritage adviser Mitch McKay noticed the error when he travelled to the town to meet with Bundarra Lions Club members about tidying up the property.
Mr McKay’s observation was presented to councillors at last month’s ordinary meeting, after which acting general manager George Cowan said Council would fix the error.
“The signage at Bundarra Cemetery has only just been brought to the attention of Council but will be replaced in due course,” Mr Cowan said.
In his report to Council, Mr McKay said caution was needed for any works within the cemetery itself. “The Lions Club are wishing to tidy up the cemetery in particular the grave surrounds, re-fix monuments, straighten monuments, repoint brickwork and erect a cemetery sign board with the layout of the denominations,” he said.
“I advised that conservation works within cemeteries should be done by specialists.
“There should be no attempt to refix any ironwork or stonework to the surrounds unless undertaken by a specialist with early photographic evidence to support the works.”
But Mr McKay did clear Lions Club members to remove weeds from around gravestones by hand and fill rabbit holes.
He also said brickwork could be fixed, but specified that a bricklayer should do the works using lime mortar only and without introducing any new bricks into the work.
The heritage adviser indicated his support for the club’s proposed cemetery signage board, but said Council would have to see a concept plan before construction.
