After beating local Armidale schools, the St Mary’s team travelled to Tamworth for the north west carnival last Thursday.
The side played six games and were undefeated before they advanced to the final to take on the unbeaten Scone Grammar School.
A chance to represent the region was on the cards for the winner and the side from Armidale didn’t disappoint.
A strong defensive effort early on saw the St Mary’s team hold out Scone.
They were able to turn their defence into points after regaining possession.
The St Mary’s team scored three quick tries to put Scone on the back foot.
Scone hit back shortly before the half-time siren with a try.
A half-time chat with coach Anthony Bible re-instilled the team’s confidence and came out firing in the second stanza.
Two quick tries and some solid defensive work saw the Armidale champions run out winners 25-5.
Bible said they repesented the school with pride.
“All the boys should be congratulated on the effort and the way they have represented the school at both the Armidale Carnival and in Tamworth,” he said.
“The boys have been a pleasure to train and work with over the last couple of months.
“It has been a team effort.”
The team travel to Sydney for the NSW finals this Friday, May 27.
