The petition has been sent to Northern Tablelands MP Adam Marshall and Armidale Dumaresq councillors. They will discuss the issue on Tuesday.
A number of residents are expected to present their submissions for Link Road to remain open during Council’s Have Your Say session.
“It’s time Council listened to the concerns of residents and stopped this proposal in its tracks,” Holmfield Drive resident Russell Evans said yesterday.
Last year, Council was forced to seek legal advice on whether a decision to keep open Link Road would leave them exposed to court action. In December councillors voted to defer endorsing traffic committee recommendations to further consult with the community on whether the road should be closed. Link Road’s closure is scheduled as part of the Foothills Estate development.
In 2009, Council signed an agreement with the McCloy Group to develop a new road, Holmfield Drive, to replace Link Road as the fourth leg on the Glen Innes roundabout. The issue has divided neighbours as completion of the estate draws near.
Some residents claim Link Road’s closure could confuse drivers at the roundabout and increase a risk of accidents along the alternative route of Holmfield Drive.
Link Road is mostly used by motorists accessing Armidale’s west, as well as by trucks accessing a quarry. If the road is closed, drivers would have to turn off the highway at the Glen Innes roundabout and drive along the newly constructed Holmfield Drive as an alternative route.
