Northern Tablelands MP Adam Marshall it was an important milestone for the community.
“For a lot of people this development has been viewed as a pipe dream and now it is here and happening,” Mr Marshall said.
The contract was awarded to construction company A.W Edwards, which will be tearing down the mortuary and former paediatrics buildings, tree removal, building a new link between the hospital and Clark Centre as well as diversion of existing plumbing, power and water.
“These facilities will provide accommodation and services for the whole community,” hospital general manager Wendy Mulligan said.
The works will continue until July after which time a main construction phase will begin.
