The World War II vessel is an important part of military history, and is remembered with its own memorial in Central Park.
HMAS Armidale served only 173 days in conflict before it was sunk off the Timorese coast in 1942, after enduring two days of bombing.
Training Ship Armidale Petty Officer Tarnia Patton said it was important to remember the bravery of the crew, in particular 19-year-old Ordinary Seaman Teddy Sheean, who refused to abandon ship after it began sinking and continued to fire at the attacking Japanese aircraft until HMAS Armidale sank.
“It’s the 73rd anniversary of the sinking of HMAS Armidale,” she said.
On Saturday a memorial service in Central Park at 10am will be held, followed by a barbecue and open day at the Training Ship Armidale Unit on Brown Street.
On Sunday morning a memorial service will be held at St Peter’s Cathedral.
