The man is just one community member One of a Kind has rewarded through its Acts of Kindness Project to promote goodwill in the community.
Nominated by his wife for his continuing help with an elderly aunt who needed help with everyday chores, Mr Darnell said it was just what people should be doing for each other.
“It’s just what you do for someone else,” Mr Darnell said.
“I didn’t think anything of it.
“People need help, so everyone should help out whenever they can.”
One of a Kind program coordinator Brian Moore said nominees were picked out of a draw to win the cash prize.
“This initiative is a nice way to motivate people to do nice things,” Mr Moore said.
“It’s really not how grand the act.
“It’s about just doing something for someone else.”
The Acts of Kindness Project calls for nominations of kind acts, with forms going into a weekly draw of a cash prize.
A grand prize of $3000 is on offer, with a weekly draw of $1000.
The project is continuing into next month, with the final draw to be held at the Carols by Candlelight concert on December 9.
The competition is open to residents and community groups in Armidale and Uralla.
Nomination forms can be dropped into The Express office, or the One of a Kind shop at 2/151 on Rusden Street.
