NSW Police and emergency services were called to South Durras, near Batemans Bay, after reports a fisherman had been swept into the sea about 1.30pm.
The Westpac Life Saver Helicopter and police from the Far South Coast Local Area Command found the man about an hour later but he was unable to be revived by paramedics.
The man, believed to have been in his mid 50s, was not wearing a lifejacket. He has not been formally identified.
NSW Police will prepare a report for the coroner.
