They have welded together a mock car complete with fitted gas jets to simulate a burning car.
The car was delivered to its new home at Rural Fire Service’s New England centre last weekend and the volunteers wasted no time testing out the new training equipment. The training prop was built under the NSW government Youth Opportunities Grant. Northern Tablelands MP Adam Marshall was at the demonstration and called the new prop ‘innovative and impressive’.
BackTrack co-ordinator Michelle Rottcher said the team worked for several months on the project which also has built in aerosol cans that explode to mimic characteristics of a real burning car.
Members of the Rural Fire Service worked closely with the guys at BackTrack to develop a truly unique prop which comes complete with the Back Track dog as its bonnet badge.
Superintendent Steve Mepham said the 1300 volunteers in the New England area will benefit greatly from the new training prop.
The next challenge for the team at BackTrack is to create a mock plane fuselage for airport fire crews to practise in, a vital addition for the city as it makes a bid to improve and enlarge its airport.
