Police will allege a 22-year-old man and a 15-year-old boy were carrying house-breaking implements at 12.40am on Thursday.
Inspector Chris McKinnon said officers observed the two males on Crown land near Simmons Street before making the arrests.
He said both were carrying a knife.
Inspector McKinnon said the 15-year-old was also armed with a hammer.
The alleged offenders were taken to Armidale Police Station where they were charged with possessing house-breaking implements and carrying an offensive weapon.
Both had bail refused to appear before the local court and children’s court yesterday.
The arrests followed reports of numerous car break-ins around the city.
Police saw a spike in reports of cars being broken into over the weekend, with six vehicles being targeted by thieves.
A further five vehicles were reportedly ransacked between Friday and Sunday.
Officers were left scratching their heads after discovering a Hyundai Ascent on Monday after thieves ripped the steering wheel from the car, leaving the rest of the vehicle untouched.
The bizarre theft and yesterday’s arrests prompted police warnings.
“We are urging residents to report any suspicious behaviour or activity to the police,” Inspector McKinnon said.
“People should ensure there are no valuables left in the car and all car doors and windows are locked.”
Those who may be able to assist investigations should call Armidale Police on 6771 0699 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
