WHILE it’s commonplace to see plays based on books, it’s unusual to witness a stage production based entirely around different works of art.

But that’s what upcoming production Out of the Frame plans to do, bringing to life 17 works owned by New England Regional Art Museum.
Benjamin Thorn helped write the pieces and will co-direct the performance.
He said the unique idea came from the Netherlands.
“Part of the inspiration was Rijksmuseum’s performance of Rembrandt’s Night Watch in a shopping mall a couple of years ago,” Thorn said.
“Several of us then thought we should do that here but with Norman Lindsay’s Apollo’s Vanguard.”
The production is being performed by a variety of volunteers and will raise funds for the NERAM trust.
“We have people from The Armidale Drama and Musical Society, University of New England theatre students and even school students,” Thorn said. He said the performance will suit all tastes with no knowledge of the artwork needed to enjoy the show.
“Most of the interpretations we are doing are quite funny, and we will be projecting the artworks on a screen at the back,” he said.
Out of the Frame is on Saturday, August 8 at TAS Hoskins Centre with shows at 3pm and 7pm.
