Vice-Chancellor Annabelle Duncan addressed the crowd on Booloominbah lawns acknowledging the indigenous community.
“The university is built on Aboriginal land and we owe that debt to them and the Torres Straight Islanders for the culture and very long history that we bring,” Professor Duncan said. “We want to make this place welcoming again for Aboriginal people and I’m hoping we can build our number of students and make it even more welcoming.”
Oorala’s Elder in residence, Colin Ahoy, began proceedings by presenting the Welcome to Country before student Nina Sands and Aboriginal Community Liaison Officer Cyril Green also spoke about the significance of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people’s connection to country.
NAIDOC activities will be taking place throughout the week.
