Just a month ago East Armidale coach Mark Gwynne was wondering how to get his side back in semi-final contention after a string of lacklustre performances saw them languishing near the bottom of the table.

Four weeks on his side now sits in second after consecutive wins over two northern conference powerhouses in the McDonald’s Northern Inland Premier League.
Following on from last weekend’s 3-2 upset over the then undefeated Joeys FC, East backed that victory up with a 2-1 win over North Armidale.
“Two wins in a row is very pleasing,” Gwynne said.
“We’re in second now, which is somewhere we didn’t look like being a few weeks ago.”
East led 1-nil at half time after Hoani Morrel latched on to an Eric Lemesseriur cross 30 minutes into the match.
Morrel capped off his double 15 minutes into the second half with another headed goal to give East a 2-nil buffer.
North got one back inside the final 15 minutes, but East’s defence held strong in the dying stages to ensure they would secure the three points.
“It did get back to 2-1, but they never really threatened us,” Gwynne said.
“With the chances we had it should have been 4-nil at half time.
“We have to capitalise on the chances we are creating or we will get beaten by the stronger sides. Our defence was good, especially late.”
Lemesseriur was named an unlikely man of the match.
“He stepped up from reserve grade and played really well,” Gwynne said.
“Hoani and Adam Lennon also played well.”
East will join the rest of the premier league in a bye this weekend, something Gwynne is far from pleased about with his side finally hitting form.
“It’s just crap, the way the competition is structured it makes it impossible to get a roll on,” he said.
“I can’t understand it.”
The other match in the northern conference saw Demon Knights knock off Joeys 3-2 at Rologas.
