Her parents, award-winning fundraisers Matt and Lynda Lynch, have raised thousands of dollars for families of children with cancer.
Now they are one of those families.
The road looks rough for the Lynch family over the next two years.
Their youngest daughter Sara, 10, has been diagnosed with leukaemia two weeks ago and now faces years of chemotherapy.
Long-time family friend Troy Johnson said the family was coping the best they could.
“Sara had been sick for a couple of months but it was thought to be flu,” Mr Johnson said.
“You just don’t assume it is going to be leukaemia and it took multiple trips to the doctor to find out what was wrong.”
Sara is currently staying at Ronald McDonald house while she undergoes three to four months of chemotherapy at Sydney Children’s Hospital in Sydney.
Once those sessions are complete the Lynch family will return to Armidale, but the visits will be far from over.
Sara will need to fly to Sydney every two weeks for chemotherapy sessions for two years.
Since the diagnosis the city has rallied to support the family, with fundraising ventures including a treadmill event at Anytime Fitness, a golf day and a champagne ladies’ lunch planned.
Mr Johnson hopes to raise as much money as possible for travel and medical costs.
“It’s hard to work out how much everything is going to cost, Lynda will have to take time off work so every dollar counts,” he said.
The Lynch family has previously raised money for several charities, with Lynda Lynch wining an Australia Day award for her drought fundraising efforts. “It’s ironic because the family used to do a lot of fundraising for Ronald McDonald House,” Mr Johnson said. “I’m just honoured to get the support for them.”
Speaking from Sydney Children’s Hospital, Mr Lynch thanked people for their support of Sara.
“We are overwhelmed with support from the Armidale community as well as family and friends,” he said.
“Our heads are still spinning but we know she is in good hands at the hospital.”
