One of a Kind will hand out mobile phones to families on the land after rolling out its Bush Telegraph campaign this month.
It is hoped the campaign will create a support network to help farmers facing tough times on the land. One of a Kind program coordinator Brian Moore said anyone in the industry would be eligible for the service.
“The whole idea is to roll out initially 100 phones to retired farmers, wives, farmers and anyone involved in that industry with the ability to be able to speak to each other,” Mr Moore said.
One of a Kind chief executive Michael Ticehurst the campaign was about farmers helping farmers.
“Some farmers are resilient ... to seeking help, the reality is that many farmers have the knowledge, skills, experience and personal qualities to genuinely help other farmers ,” Mr Ticehurst said.
Mr Moore said 100 is only the initial number of phones being supplied the and he is keen to see more farmers get involved in the region.
He said attempts in the past haven’t been successful due to people not wanting to open up to strangers or simply don’t have the time.
“We want to reconnect the community and show that we care and a lot of people have tried,” he said.
“It’s just not getting the traction because farmers are reluctant to talk.”
