With 48 of 50 polling booths counted, Mr Marshall won 17,302 votes, with Labor candidate Debra O'Brien securing 5689 votes.
On first-preference counting, Greens' candidate Mercurius Goldstein won 7.6 per cent, or 2035, of votes across the electorate.
While Mr Marshall increased his lead on first-count preferences, up 29.2 per cent, it was a different story with counting after preferences.
There, Mr Marshall notched a swing against the Nationals of 2.4 per cent; there was a swing to Labor of 2.4 per cent.
On Saturday night, Mr Marshall celebrated his victory at the Ex-Servies Club with Armidale Dumaresq councillors Rob Richardson and Jenny Bailey.
Across the road at the Wicklow, Greens councillor Peter O'Donohue helped console Ms O'Brien, who remained upbeat.
In NSW, the Coalition was returned to power with 52 seats to Labor's 32 seats.
