Armidale Dumaresq Council has applied for federal funding to build the roundabout under the state and federal Blackspot program.
Handel Street residents have led the charge for action, claiming the area is a prime target for speeding motorists, with parking on both sides of the road exacerbating the problem.
Members of the Local
Traffic Committee are seeking a solution, especially with the
opening of the new residential college at the University of New England.
Residents also want Council to rethink the two-hour parking zones on the south side of Handel Street. Committee members
will meet with residents and college managers in order to prepare a report for Council.
The committee also considered a request from elderly residents nearby in Queen Elizabeth Drive for a pedestrian crossing to be constructed near Sunny Cove Village. The retirement complex has plans to expand and is home to more than 60 people aged over 55.
New guidelines have been issued by the state government, prompting the committee to review the request and report back to Council.
