The only two meetings held by the Armidale Harness Racing Club in 2015 have been sensationally supported by harness trainers from NSW and southern Queensland.
Three stellar events worth just north of $10,000 each will be the highlights of Sunday’s meeting.
“The Armidale Cup in particular is a cracker-jack field,” Peter Munsie from the Armidale Harness Club said.
Julie Weiderman-trained pair Mister Elegant and Mister Sky Rocket caught the eye of Munsie when the fields were released.
“They are both multiple winners at Albion Park,” he said.
But they are far from the only two chances in the race.
“Strathlachlan Andy has won four of its last five,” Munsie said.
“That’s including the Golden Guitar and a win at Tabcorp Menangle.
“Rockstar Ruler won here last weekend too.
“It’s going to be a very good race.”
Mac Sweet put its name forward to take on favouritism in the Armidale Golden Horseshoe Final.
Again trained by Weiderman, Mac Sweet won the prelude for the race last Sunday.
Munsie said earlier in the week with the right barrier draw Mac Sweet would prove difficult to topple and while not drawing horrifically, Wedierman’s filly may have a battle on her hands for the lead.
“She will find it tough to lead from there,” Munsie said.
“Rosie ORourke has drawn one inside her and has a bit of gate speed. Nunya on her outside won a good trial here last weekend too.”
However Munsie is still tipping Mac Sweet to be popular with the punters.
“I wouldn’t be surprised to see Mac Sweet start favourite after the win last weekend,” he said.
The Armidale Carnival of Cups rounds out the feature events and Munsie himself has one of the premier chances in the race. His gelding Artful Dodger blitzed the field in the heats last weekend, but has drawn gate six for Sunday’s final.
“I don’t think he has the speed to lead from there,” Munsie said.
“He’s still got to be a chance, but he will need some luck from gate six.”
