A GIGANTIC soccer ball may not seem like a necessary purchase, but the Uralla Show Society beg to differ.

Two of the inflatable man-sized balls were ordered after Uralla’s Max Schultz suggested the show’s line up of entertainment should feature a game of soccer.
But instead of lacing up their boots, players will be clipping up their seatbelts, as the match will be played in cars. Mayor Michael Pearce, who will head up the Uralla Council Team with Luke Frazier, said the novel sport was a way of adding something a bit unusual to the event.
“Like most shows we want to add something a bit different and make a bit of an impact,” Cr Pearce said.
“Luke and I will probably sit down with a floor plan, but we’ll be pretty much just hoping for the best.
“I’d say the plans will be made up on the day.”
Refereeing the match will be Michael Wellbourn, who won’t be shy in dishing out a few red cards to unruly players.
Cr Pearce and his offsider will face two different teams, one of which will feature the driving skills of Jen Marsh, who has “blinged up” a car in order to raise money for cancer charity Donate for Kate.
It’s uncertain which vehicles will take to the field on Saturday afternoon, but Mr Shultz said they will be customised for the match.
“We’ll be taping up any sharp parts,” Mr Shultz said. “The last thing we want is something popping one of the balls.”
While there will be no silver-plated cup for the winning team, Cr Pearce said the reward for winning, will be something money cannot buy.
“Honour is the prize,” he said.
