The self-confessed Armidale fanatic was named the city’s Citizen of the Year during the Australia Day Awards Ceremony, and immediately celebrated with his leading lady.
Mr Weaton said he would not have been able to win the prestigious award on his own.
“I put it down to lot of inspirational people in our community who have inspired me to get involved,” Mr Wheaton said.
“My wife and my best friend works with me and has been very involved – we do a lot together.
“I know she will certainly be as proud as I am.” The senior executive officer at Armidale City Bowling Club said his position allows him engage in city life in his day-to-day work, and credits the organisation for giving him the freedom to support community groups.
“My father was also an encouraging influence in getting things done in the community.”
The award was presented amongst a number of others, with several Armidale residents being recognised for contributions to sport, culture and society.
Among the honours was the Mayor’s Special Award, which went to the Armidale City Band.
Mayor Laurie Bishop said the recipients had shown great dedication to their city in persevering to make a difference.
