A team of investigators are on their way from Tamworth to examine the site on the corner of Queen Elizabeth Drive and Niagara Street, which is under police guard and has been cordoned off by NSW fire brigade tape.
Inspector Chris McKinnon said police were in the process of determining what started the blaze with the assistance of fire investigators, with officers looking at the possibility the blaze was deliberately lit.
“There was a broken window at the rear and a fire occurred in the house, but police are still conducting their investigation,” Inspector McKinnon said.
“Whether someone entered through a back door and lit a fire [is undetermined].”
He said the fire caused substantial damage to the inside of the house.
Authorities were notified of the blaze at 2.50am today, with firefighters and police arriving shortly after to find the house well alight.
Inspector McKinnon said police would like to speak with anyone who might be able to assist with their enquiries, encouraging them to either contact the Armidale Police Station on 6771 0699 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 000 333.
