New Super Spuds president Peter Presnell presented their case at the Group 19 meeting in Inverell last night to play reserve grade and league tag, but said if the Ghosts’ rugby side folds he would probably have a first grade.

“It is a bit unfortunate for both teams to be like this but Guyra is a small place,” Presnell said.

“I think they (Ghosts) are also having meetings like us at the moment.

“It is a bit like a Mexican stand-off.” 

Presnell recently took the mantle of president and is trying to resurrect the once-proud club.

The front-rower is a former Spud who returned to town this year after 17 years playing for Old Bar in Group 3.

The Spuds were  beaten 60-12 in the 2012 grand final by Glen Innes and haven’t been seen since.

The last few months have seen a few failed attempts to get a committee together for season 2015, until last Wednesday at a last-ditch meeting.

Jason Campbell will be the vice-president, former president Dan Mitchell will be assistant vice-president and Vickie Leyland will be secretary.

“We are looking for a few more committee members and a treasurer,” Presnell said.

“We have got 19 names at the moment on paper and a few maybes.”

Rodney Bull has agreed to come back after a big season for Inverell, as well as a few other players playing for other sides in the group.

Presnell submitted that the Spuds would play reserve grade and league tag, with a possibility of juniors and first grade dependent on numbers.

“We will put our case forward to play reserves only and see how we go,” Presnell said.

Group 19 boss and Ashford president Mick Lewis ironically asked the same thing of the group a few years ago for the Roosters and was rejected.

Although he did allow Uralla to do the same thing in 2013 and has small clubs at the top of his agenda for next season.

“Our biggest concern is getting players,” Presnell said.

“We just want to get Guyra up and running again.”
