The 22-year-old man, whose identity was suppressed by Armidale Magistrate Karen Stafford, pleaded guilty to a string of charges relating to domestic violence, including intimidation and two counts of contravening a restriction in a domestic violence order.
The court heard how the man was imitating a scene from the Hollywood movie The Matrix, in which a knife is used to cut a tracking device out of a character’s stomach.
“It would have been terrifying for people in the matter,” defence solicitor Glen Kee said.
“The violence was directed at himself.”
His client had been diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome and ADHD and struggled with alcohol and drug abuse.
Magistrate Karen Stafford said breaching a domestic violence order was a very serious offence and insisted the man spend more time in jail for his crimes.
The man had been detained in custody since October 13.
“The punishment needs to reflect how seriously the courts view domestic violence,” she said.
He was sentenced to 12 months’ jail with a non-parole term of six months.
He must abstain from alcohol and drugs and comply with rehabilitation treatments.
The man will be eligible for parole in April next year.
