The matter was due for a brief mention when the Armidale Local court sat on Wednesday.
A total of 37 charges have been laid against the man, including multiple counts of sexual intercourse without consent, assault occasioning bodily harm, attempt to choke with intent to commit an indictable offence and aggravated sexual assault inflicting actual bodily harm on the victim. The man first appeared in court in relation to these charges on June 18, but did not apply for bail.
Legal representative for the accused Yvonne Phillippous sought the adjournment to determine if other witness were to be called to the stand.
The court heard a truck driver who picked up the victim and brought her to a police station and the victim’s mother are likely to be called as witnesses in the case.
She said her client wanted to ensure all the evidence was properly served to the court.
“[He] is in custody and we like to move quickly when they’re in custody,” Ms Phillippous said.
“But he was adamant about the adjournment.”
The matter will return to court on December 17.
