"I was just told to go home and that I would have to live with it," he said.
"But that’s how it goes."
Mr Waters hasn't let the disease interfere with his love of motorbikes, making special alterations to his handle bars so he can stay on the road.
The comments come as a pilot program announces it has reduced waiting times to see a specialist for rheumatoid arthritis.
Arthritis Australia and the Australian Rheumatology Association have reduced travelling time for patients by 90 per cent and waiting times by 70 per cent thanks to a monthly clinic.
The clinic sees Coffs Harbour rheumatologist Hanish Bagga visit Armidale to help rheumatoid arthritis patients with their treatment.
Dr Bagga said the clinic was always full and could not understate the importance of treating the condition as soon as possible.
"Time makes a big difference to joints," he said.
Dr Bagga said delaying treatment for the disease could lead to greater joint damage and disability later in life.
Anyone wanting to see Dr Bagga can get a referral from their GP.
