Former prime minister Gough Whitlam, who died on Tuesday aged 98, paid a rare visit to Armidale when he was deputy leader of the Labor Party.

The photo was taken on July 10, 1963, however, little else is known of the visit.
Within months of Mr Whitlam's visit to Armidale, prime minister Robert Menzies called a snap election in November, which Labor lost.
Mr Whitlam eventually became prime minister in 1972 and was sacked in 1975.
It would be another 20 years before Mr Whitlam returned to the Northern Tablelands, this time to visit Tamworth, in 1995.
Early on Tuesday morning his children Antony, Nicholas and Stephen Whitlam and Catherine Dovey issued the following statement.
"Our father, Gough Whitlam, has died this morning at the age of 98. A loving and generous father, he was a source of inspiration to us and our families and for millions of Australians."
There will be a private cremation and a public memorial service.
