IT WAS something of an in and out day for junior water polo players in Tamworth on Saturday.
At the South and West War Memorial Pool, Scully Park, Northern Inland Academy of Sport water polo coaches were overseeing a selection trial for a new intake of 20-22 players.
In the afternoon they were farewelling the first group of players to have completed the NIAS water polo program at 360 Fitness.
“It was the final intensive weekend for the squad at 360,” said NIAS water polo program manager Gail Salter.
“It’s been great. We’re very pleased with them. We’ve nominated five of the squad for various regional sports awards. We’ve had some of them medal in New Zealand with state teams and some medal with state teams at nationals.
“We also believe a couple have been identified for Australian squads down the track as well.” Craig Salter is the head coach and he’s been delighted with the way the young players have performed in the inaugural squad. Trainee coach Paddy O’Brien has also impressed with his enthusiasm and commitment.
Gail Salter said Saturday’s start to the building of the next squad was exciting.
“We’re very pleased to have some players come down from Armidale to trial as well as one girl from Gunnedah,” she said.
“That’s great to see it branching out.”
