More than 300 people flocked to Cinders Lane between 8am and 2pm on Sunday to enjoy entertainment, food stalls and sunshine.
Dumaresq Lions offered sausage sandwiches and drinks, Steve Tafra, Cathy Welsford, Dave Carr and Chris Purcell were among musicians who took to the stage throughout the day, offering soul, jazz, rock 'n' roll and experimental recorder.
"A great success, we're very proud of the support given by the people of Armidale for this project," one of the organisers, Bruce Menzies, said.
A Day on the Gravel was organised by the Civic Precinct Committee to raise awareness for a proposed performing arts centre and new war memorial library to be built at the rear of Cinders Lane.
The proposal includes a large auditorium for 500 people and a studio for 120 people, both served by a foyer over 2 levels.
One of the Civic Precinct Committee founders, Judith Ross Smith, returned to Armidale from retirement near Brisbane to enjoy the day.
"It just goes to show there's a lot of support for this performing arts centre in Armidale," she said.
