Both the Armidale side in division one and the Ex-University of New England side in division two were still alive yesterday and vying for a spot into today’s finals.
Armidale division one side’s chances took a big hit on Wednesday after a heavy 52-run defeat to Sydney 1.
After a tremendous showing with the ball, Armidale’s batting line-up failed to fire.
Sydney 1 won the toss and elected to batt at Harris Park, but were restricted to a paltry 9-127 after fantastic bowling performance by Armidale.
Richard Cannon (2-23) led the way for Armidale and was well accompanied by Ian Petherick (1-21), Dennis Cameron (1-6 off seven overs), Bruce Coppock (1-8) and Andrew Hunt (1-3).
But only Petherick (33 not out) provided any resistance with the bat, with Dick Hodgson (16) the only other player in double figures.
It was Sydney who again got the better of another Armidale side at Newling Oval. A gallant Ex-UNE side fell just three runs short of Sydney 2 in the division two match up on Wednesday.
Batting first, Sydney 2 made 8-212 from their 40 overs.
Tom Vincent (2-12) picked up two late wickets for Armidale, while John Irvine (1-12), Rowan Chandler (1-30), Dave Warner (1-44) and Tony Buchan (1-26) also picked up scalps.
Armidale made an agonisingly close 5-209 in reply. Chandler (37 not out) and Gus Stevens (36 not out) led the charge for Armidale in the middle order, while Vincent (31 not out) made some solid contributions late in the innings.
In division one yesterday Armidale had to beat Quirindi to be any chance of making the final, while in division two the Ex-UNE side had to knock of Western Sydney Wildfires.
The division one grand final will be played at the Armidale Sportsground today, while the third versus fourth match will be played at Lambert Park.
The division two final is to be played at Rologas, while third versus fourth will play at Harris Park.
