A PILOT has walked away unscathed after crash landing his plane at Armidale Airport yesterday morning.
The single engine prop, with just the pilot on board, landed heavily on the runway about 8.15am after the landing gear failed to open.
Police said there was no mayday call but emergency services were activated as a precaution.
"Police were on scene shortly after as were Fire and Rescue and Ambulance paramedics," Armidale Inspector Chris McKinnon said.
"Luckily, the pilot had been able to exit the plane without injury."
The pilot, who had been briefly delayed by yesterday morning's fog and circled in the air before the emergency, left the airport shortly after.
The plane, which had been flown from Sydney, sustained damage to the undercarriage and propeller and was towed from the runway where assessments will be made on the repairs.
Armidale Council confirmed the runway was closed for about 1.5 hours, delaying a Qantaslink flight on route from Sydney by 15 minutes.
"The aircraft landed with its wheels up (belly landing) on the main runway," a spokesperson said.
"Until the Australian Transport Safety Bureau has undertaken their investigation, it is not known whether this occurred due to mechanical failure.
"It is fortunate that the emergency response plan was the subject of a table top exercise earlier in the year as it enabled a quick response."
Late yesterday, the Australian Transport Safety Bureau confirmed it was notified of the incident, but will not be investigating.
