While the Scorpions were punching their ticket to this weekend’s grand final, North Armidale fell 1-nil to Oxley Vale Attunga at Phil Wheaton Oval.
This weekend will be a huge one for the Scorpions.
After they finish their grand final commitments at Scully Park on Saturday afternoon, they jump straight back on the bus to fly home to the Armidale City Bowling Club for the football club’s 20-year reunion celebrations.
“Everyone is very excited,” South coach Ruwan Cooper said.
“It’s going to be a great weekend.”
Jamie Wright opened the scoring after 20 minutes on Saturday when he swooped on a mistake from the North Companions goal keeper.
Jake Graham made it 2-nil on the half hour mark when he slotted home a penalty blown because of an infringement from the North Companions keeper.
“We were really coming over the top of them going into half time,” Cooper said.
South were put under immense pressure early in the second half and North Companions were awarded a penalty.
The initial penalty was actually saved by South keeper Richard Morris, but the ensuing rebound was booted into the back of the net to make it 2-1.
The match ebbed and swayed throughout the second half until 15-year-old Josh Frost sealed the win for the Scorpions when he headed a corner home with 12 minutes remaining.
Cooper talked up the youngsters prospects when talking to The Armidale Express.
“He’s our youngest player by a long way, but he’s been one of our best all year,” he said of Frost.
“He played in the midfield on Saturday, but he usually plays left back.”
South now have the opportunity to claim their maiden first grade premier league title this weekend.
“It was all a bit surreal on Saturday,” Cooper said.
“It wasn’t until we got back on the bus that it started to sink in.
“The crowd that made the trip down were great again.”
