Three are already expected to contest the chief role, while three others have nominated to take up the mantle as deputy.
Councillors Laurie Bishop, Jenny Bailey and Jim Maher are believed to have a tilt for mayor, while Margaret O'Connor, Colin Gadd and Herman Beyersdorf vying to be the deputy.
Incumbent Laurie Bishop was eager to retain his role, saying he believed maintaining the status quo would make Council more stable.
“There’s been a lot of change in the last 12 months,” Cr Bishop said last week.
Council has seen a lot of change over the past year after Cr Bishop showed former general manager Shane Burns the door at the beginning of the year. It was followed by Glenn Inglis being appointed in the position in the interim and the position being taken up by Glenn Wilcox last month.
Cr Bishop ousted his predecessor, Jim Maher, in a close six to four vote at last year’s ballot.
Meanwhile, those who are not running have been considering who they want to see as the leaders for the next year.
Speaking to The Express last week Rob Richardson said he would be in favour of recommendations for two-year terms but believed the leadership decision should be left up to councillors, rather than being handed to the public.
"A vote from peers is a safer model," he said.
Cr Richardson said he was "very surprised" at the number of his fellow councillors who were seeking election, but had "pretty much made up my mind" for he would be voting for.
He said he was 90 per cent sure he would vote that way and hoped whoever was elected would ensure stability within the Council.
