It was handed into police in February last year. It had been in the possession of the person who handed it into police for at least 30 years, according to senior constable Travis Murdock.
"It has been discovered the watch may have been a lost family relic, which led to the person handing it into police," Constable Travis Murdock said.
"The watch has a distinctive inscription on the back that would be known by the owner or someone with intimate knowledge of the watch."
"Numerous inquiries made by investigators have failed to locate the owner at this time."
So the rare piece of jewellery has been gathering dust in the police vaults ever since.
Constable Murdock said he did not want to divulge any more information about the watch, or where it was found, lest the information jeopardise the owner from claiming the jewellery.
"In the event of the owner not coming forward, police would still like to hear from any relative or friend who may know about the watch."
Anyone with information about the watch should contact Armidale Police on 6771 0699 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
