THREE Year 11 students from The Armidale School will be mixing with some of the best young minds from the country during their summer holidays, having been selected to two prestigious enrichment camps.
Thomas Mailler will spend a week at the Honeywell Engineering Summer School (HESS) at the University of New South Wales, while Harry Wright and Felix Gifford were chosen from a field of almost 1300 applicants nationally for the National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) at Australian National University in Canberra.
Tom said attending HESS in December will give him a better understanding of what engineering is and how it works in everyday life.
“I’m interested in both mechanical and chemical engineering but not sure which discipline I want to specialise in. We get to visit four universities and it will be a good opportunity to meet with engineers and talk about the areas they work in, and their study and career paths,” he said.
“For a while I was interested in aerospace engineering but this will allow me to explore other areas of science,” Felix said.
Both initiatives are supported by participating Rotary Districts, with Armidale North Rotary Club nominating Tom and Harry for their summer schools, while the Rotary Club of Armidale Central nominated Felix for his opportunity.
