DID YOU KNOW?
Mary White of Saumarez, born in 1882, was noted as a photographer and woodcarver.
When the Armidale Teachers’ College (ATC) was established in 1928 there was a need to provide accommodation for the women students and this was met by using Girrahween, a building opposite Central Park, which had originally been constructed as a private boarding school for girls. In 1930 the residence was renamed after the then Director of Education in New South Wales, Stephen Henry Smith. S H Smith House remained as a residence for ATC until 1972, then continued as a residence for Armidale College of Advanced Education students until amalgamation with the University in 1989.

Local equestrian Bronte Dagg, 10, from Saumarez Ponds took the State of Origin competition to the equestrian arena recently returning home with a triumphant win at Brisbane Royal (EKKA).
Bronte, who is a year 5 student at St John's, beat a competitive field of young riders to win her nine and under 12 years riding class and then went on to be awarded Champion Junior Girl Rider under 12. The win qualifies her for one of the most prestigious hacking events in the country - the Grand Nationals, which will be held in 2015.
Riding her pony Smithfield's Toy Dancer (Toy), Bronte said of her win: "I really wasn't expecting to win as there were a lot of good riders there but was over the moon when we did.
"I had the biggest smile on my face when I was sashed with the big purple ribbon in front of everyone in the grandstand. I have never competed at Brisbane Royal before so to go there and win Champion Junior Girl Rider at my first attempt was just amazing. I will definitely be going back next year."
Bronte and Toy had a successful show, taking home ribbons in all their other events at the Royal.
Her other show pony - Woranora Flaunt It - also came home with placings in all her classes and Reserve Champion Led Welsh B Bronte was also recently selected to ride at the Equestrian Australia Interschool Nationals in Victoria.
