THE Armidale School’s First XV continues its shared top-of-the- ladder status in the GPS third grade competition, following a strong defeat of Newington College Thirds 41-0 in Armidale on Saturday.

In rainy conditions, the TAS outfit was too strong for the Sydney visitors. Wayne “Buddy” Mumbulla scored the first try for TAS and, proving he is handy with the boot as well as his feet, went on to convert three others.
Flanker Pierce Hayden followed a blustering game the previous week against The Scots College, putting the ball over the line twice, while Nicholas Finney, Clay Lillyman and Lachlan Mack all scored one apiece.
“Considering the conditions the team played with great patience and skill execution,” coach Jamie Moore said.
“The integrity of the backline was very strong, managing their defence and preventing the opposition from putting any points on the board. It was great to see them play such an expansive game when it could have been otherwise. Newington tackled to the last minute, and those who braved the conditions were rewarded with skilled rugby from both sides.”
The win keeps TAS at equal first place on the GPS Thirds competition alongside Sydney Grammar School and Scots.
Moore said there was plenty of motivation to repeat the performance on Saturday at 2.15pm against Sydney Boys High School, at the last home game of the season.
Sydney High will bring hundreds of boys to TAS for a traditional weekend of competition in not just rugby but also rifle shooting, tennis, basketball, football and debating. Points are accrued across competitions for the Hannon and Harris Shield, named after long-serving Sydney High staff member Mr Tony Hannon and former TAS deputy headmaster Mr Grant Harris.
