Baa Baas were on top from start to finish in the 35-10 win in monsoon like conditions at Alcatraz Rugby Park and in doing so sent a warning shot to the rest of the compe-tition that they aren’t dead yet.
It was the Blues first loss since the start of May, but what made it even more astonishing was that it came at the hands of the last placed Baa Baas.
Blues coach Anthony McMillan was obviously frustrated with the performance of his side.
“We were still at the pub,” McMillan said of his players’ mindset.
“But full credit to them, they played all over the top of us.”
McMillan said the loss may be the injection of hunger his side needed heading into the finals.
“It was a major wake-up call,” he said.
“The boys thought they were going to cruise through.
“We only played 10 minutes of good footy.
“We have the bye this weekend, so we will knuckle down at training and do some hard yards.”
The Blues trailed the entire match and found themselves down 21-10 with 11 minutes remaining when the game was stopped for 40 minutes due to a broken leg to Baa Baas skipper Nick Dooner.
Baa Baas payed tribute to their injured skipper with two tries to seal the win following his departure in an ambulance.
McMillan said it was a disappointing performance all-round, but particularly in the forwards.
“Our forwards were lazy around the park,” he said.
In the other match of the round, St Albert’s beat Guyra 29-19.
