Armidale Dumaresq Council had planned to rename the stretch from the Canambe Street roundabout to the local government boundary in Ebor, changing it to Waterfall Way.
In May councillors floated the proposal as a way of promoting the region.
Following submissions from 39 of the affected residents Council decided to retain the original street address; however the road would be referred to as the tourist route of Waterfall Way.
Twenty-five residents objected to the name change, saying it would cause them massive inconveniences and could be life threatening in an emergency.
The inconveniences included having to change their addresses on licences, insurance and passports, as well as disruptions to mail delivery and possible loss of business.
One submission against the decision said it “could be a problem in the emergency service being able to find us, particularly as you will be talking to someone who does not have local knowledge”.
“There have been more murders in the five kilometres around us than there are waterfalls on the whole road so perhaps it should be called ‘Murder Way’,” the letter continued.
Others commented Council should do more to improve the condition of the road rather than trying to appeal to tourists through the name.
