Armidale once had its own jail, located at the site of the Old Teachers’ College and built for £2318. Between 1863 and 1898, 4685 prisoners were committed to Armidale Gaol. The facility was also used as an asylum for the insane. Six executions were carried out at the jail, which was disestablished in 1920.
The first chancellor of the University of New England was Earle Page, a politician who was the caretaker Prime Minister of Australia for three weeks in 1939 following the death of Joseph Lyons.
A peer-reviewed study estimated that use of wood heaters in Armidale was responsible for about 11.5 premature deaths per year with estimated annual health cost of $14.95 million - about $4720 per year for every wood heater in the city.

New England MP Barnaby Joyce said the federal government is working with businesses to create new opportunities, new markets and new jobs.
The $488.2 million Entrepeneurs’ Infrastructure Program will allow businesses to request an evaluation which will provide detailed recommendations and assistance.
“New South Wales’ 687,400 small and medium businesses are the bedrock of our community, creating jobs and underpinning our economy. Our new programmes mean that they can access the services needed to develop their businesses, in a user friendly, streamlined way,” Mr Joyce said.

Arguably, the world’s most accomplished theatrical practice scholar, Mary Luckhurst, will share her extraordinary insights into the creative practice of acting with members of the Armidale community, at a public lecture hosted by the University of New England.
UNE associate professor of English and Theatre Studies, Anne Pender, explained Professor Luckhurst is visiting UNE next week, to lead workshops in creative practice for the University’s staff and students, but at the same time, the University is keen to share this extraordinary experience with the wider community.
Members of the New England community are encouraged to attend Professor Luckhurst’s lecture, The actor’s body as haunted house, on Thursday, July 24, from 4pm, in Lecture Theatre A3, UNE Arts building. Refreshments will be provided following the event.
An initiative aimed at using renewable energy to create a small scale elictricty and energy system for a rural town will be launched at the University of New England later today.
The launch will start at 1.45pm today at the Wright Lecture Theatre at UNE and will immediately follow a public lecture by Fereidoon Sioshansi from Menlo Energy Economics.
Dr Sioshansi’s lecture will focus on the impact of distributed electricity generation on utility business models.
