Mr Marshall recently announced his support the decriminalisation of marijuana to comfort the terminally ill.
“There’s been a lot of people in the Northern Tablelands electorate that have approached me in support of the Haslams and telling me their stories… and how a small amount of medical marijuana could have helped their loved ones,” he said. The Armidale Express’s sister paper The Northern Daily Leader has been leading the charge for the decriminalisation of marijuana by telling the story of Dan Haslam and his family.
Mr Marshall said the campaign had had an effect on the push to decriminalisation marijuana with many people telling him they had changed their minds on drugs for the sick because of it.
But Mr Marshall stressed that he was not in favour of completely decriminalising marijuana.
“I wouldn’t support the decriminalising totally. This is an issue of compassion and science,” he said.
“I would not support a bill that gave a carte blanche at all.”
Tamworth MP Kevin Anderson is working on a private member’s bill which would decriminalise the drug for the terminally ill, which Mr Marshall said he would support in parliament.
“I’m looking forward to assisting my colleague and help ensure the Bill receives the support of the House,” he said.
Mr Marshall’s announcement comes as NSW Premier Mike Baird has given his strongest sign yet he will support a move to decriminalise the drug for the seriously ill.
The Haslam family had a one hour meeting with the Premier on Monday and said they were confident they had his backing.
