Four TAS players faced students from McCarthy Catholic College, winning every game as part of the Country Secondary Schools Chess Competition.
TAS will now go on to play Holy Trinity School in Inverell.
TAS chess coordinator Catherine Boydell said students played chess in the library every lunchtime and even before school. Ms Boydell said the immortal game had plenty to teach a young mind no matter what they wanted to do after school.
“There is a lot of stress involved in this when it’s one on one so it’s about self-discipline and strategy,” she said.
“You’ve got to be able to think so many moves aheads … it’s a skill that’s really fantastic for all.”
Despite TAS’s recent win they suffered an early loss to O’Connor Catholic College which means they’ve been knocked from the winners’ round and are unlikely to return.
The TAS side featured two year 11, one year 10 and one year 9 student.
McCarthy Catholic College fielded the day’s only year 7 student as well as two year 9s and a year 10.
