SLEX 2012 canned

THIS year’s Armidale Sustainable Living Expo has been cancelled due to a lack of funds, but sustainability events will still be held throughout the year.

A media release from Armidale Dumaresq Council said there was not enough sponsorship money and support for this year’s SLEX to enable it to take place in spring.

The SLEX co-ordinating committee has been developing a new strategy for the event, following some concerns about previous expos and a need to reinvigorate the event, and has been meeting since February to work on a strategy to achieve this.

Armidale Dumaresq Council has committed its standard $30,000 per year for three years for the event, but the committee does not feel confident in furthering the new strategy with only these funds.

Council general manager Shane Burns said he remained optimistic about the future of SLEX, due to the level of interest and activity in sustainability in the community.

“Council’s financial contribution and in-kind support is significant,” Mr Burns said.

“Furthermore, SLEX is an educational event that helps individuals learn more, so that as a community we can all contribute to this vision.”
