Armidale Dumaresq Council contributed $9000 towards the project to get a shelter for the society’s adopt-a-pet days. New England Community Mutual donated $4000 after the project received 235 votes on their heartofourcommunity.com.au web page. Armidale councillor Andrew Murat said the shelter would provide much needed protection from the elements. 

“In the winter months when we have cold winds having young kittens and that sort of thing is a bit of an issue,” he said.

“They’ve got funding to put curtains around the shelter to act as windbreaks.” The new shelter will also reduce the risk of parvovirus.

Armidale RSPCA’s Neen Brown said the organisation had worked to prevent the disease but that a shelter would certainly help.

“It is a really common disease, we’ve been lucky but the park is ripe with it,” she said.
