The move is aimed at saving council money on sign maintenance as well as making No Stopping zones more visible.
Council director of public infrastructure David Steller said it costs about $70 to $80 to maintain a sign for 10 years.
This is compared with about $5 to $10 for a No Stopping zone over the same period at 50 cents a metre.
The yellow line rule was adopted in NSW last year and had been pushed by the NRMA in 2012.
Mr Steller said many people were not aware of the rule or its consequences.
“Most people I ask say no, people haven’t paid attention,” he said.
The lines will make driving less confusing and be more visible to drivers according to Mr Steller.
“One of the issues that has come up at the state level … is the plethora of signs distracting people form what they are doing and this is one small measure to reduce the amount of signage to control parking,” he said.
“It’s easy for people to see a yellow line from a long distance whereas they may not see the sign over 20 or 30 metres away.”
Drivers found parking on the lines can face fines of more than $300 and lose two demerit points.
“The message is: don’t stop on a yellow line,” Mr Steller said.
Currently yellow lines have been completed on kerbs in the central business district.
Mr Steller said council was about two per cent finished the line paintings and it would be about 5 to 10 years before the signs were completely phased out.
