But for those in the know, the National Parks and recreation areas in the New England region offer some stunning and secluded locations for a family weekend away.
Manager of Armidale Outdoors Andrew Coventry said summer was often too hot for comfortable camping and autumn was the perfect time to explore much of what the region had to offer.
“Places such as West Kunderang and Georges Junction are fantastic at this time of the year,” he said.
For people looking to take a day walk, Point Lookout offers hiking trails for a range of abilities.
Mr Coventry said the National parks were often under-utilised.
“There are at least four world heritage areas within two hours of Armidale,” he said.
“It’s a really special place to live.”
