The crowd may have been a little down, but that didn’t stop Armidale Greyhound Racing Club president Gary Carson from declaring Saturday’s meeting a raging success.

There wasn’t a lot of success to be had by local trainers, however there was some for a Guyra trainer.
Ben Vidler picked up a winner in the last of the day as Tamam Shud ($5) won in an upset victory.
The greyhound jumped out of box number two to win by a length and a half from Sportsman’s Lyn ($5) and My Son John ($6) in a time of 21.09 seconds over 365 metres. Barry Hobson’s Chanson ($1.30) was heavily backed pre-race, but was no match for Tamam Shud.
Carson said he was extremely happy to see Vidler get a winner.
“It was a very pleasing win that one,” he said. “It’s good to see young Ben doing well.”
While Tamam Shud’s performance was terrific, Carson said it wasn’t the best of the day. That recognition went to Al Zarb’s Smart Perfect ($2.50).
The equal favourite jumped out of box six and streaked to a seven length victory in a blistering time of 30.21 seconds over 520 metres.
“Smart Perfect ran a very quick time,” Carson said.
“It was an impressive run.”
Wauchope trainer Maureen West trained a double on the day.
Her first was in race two when Harry Dirt ($2.50) thrashed the field, with $2 favourite Ellendale Rose second a whopping eight lengths behind.
Cosmic Tina ($5) capped off a successful day for West, when she raced to a one length win out of box five.
Lloyd Metcalf trained the first winner of the day.
Jay Jay’s Raider ($2.50) won by a length and a half out of box four from Sieberling ($4).
Barry Evan’s Logies Shiraz ($2.25) started favourite in race three and rewarded punters with a six and a half length victory.
Race four brought another big winning margin as Ben Spence’s Five for Twenty ($2.50) won by four lengths from Lee’s Rebel ($3).
Carson said he was pleased with the overall result of the day, barring crowd numbers.
“The meeting went very well,” he said. “The crowd was a little down, but I don’t really know why.
“Maybe it was due to it being the first day of school holidays, I don’t really know.”
The next Armidale Greyhound Racing Club meeting is on May 10.
