Shantell Waters and Ricky Quinlan both faced Armidale Local Court to make bail applications on Monday.
The court heard a group of people had chased the male victim to a block of units on the morning of January 3.
Waters allegedly went into the apartment and located the man, notifying the others of his presence.
The court heard the man then jumped from a second-storey balcony and ran some distance before jumping on the back of a postman’s bike and subsequently ran again.
When he was tired of running, the group caught up with him and attacked him at a bicycle path near Niagara Street, with some members of the group allegedly wielding weapons.
The victim was taken to Armidale Hospital where he was treated for wounds including lacerations and bruises.
Police prosecutor Michelle Simmons said bail was opposed because “even strict bail conditions may not assist in protecting the victim in these circumstances”.
She said she understood “tension had been building between the families over a period of time”.
Quinlan, 33, had previously pleaded not guilty to charges of affray, being armed with intent to commit an indictable offence and assault occasioning actual bodily harm in the company of others while Waters, 39, pleaded not guilty to affray.
They will each be subject to strict bail conditions where they will be required to live in Moree, report to police daily, not consume alcohol or drugs, forfeit $500 if they breach bail, obey a nightly curfew, be of good behaviour, not contact the complainant or witness, not discuss the matter with any of the co-accused or witnesses and not use any form of social media.
Quinlan and Waters, who are in a defacto relationship, will reside with Waters’ father.
Waters and Quinlan will face court again on April 7, alongside co-accused defendents Craig Waters, Kirralee Crawford, Matthew Carr, Eliah Moran and Grace Ward.
