The competition which has been held since the late 80s sees the best junior golfers from across the region contest the event.

More than 50 golfers teed off in the tournament on Sunday

A three-way playoff was required before Mehmut-Grohn was crowned champion.

Callum Butler was Armidale’s best-placed competitor after finishing in third place in the boy’s with a gross score of 78.

Armidale Golf Club’s junior coordinator Rob Butler said Mehmut-Grohn’s victory was exciting for the growth of female golfers in the region.

“Amelia has a handicap of one and is quite a good golfer and it was quite a strong field,” he said.

“[Her win] is absolutely going to help grow the sport in the region and the Jack Newtown Junior Golf Foundation is working on by encouraging more girls to stick with golf.”

Butler said the Armidale Golf Club was encouraging juniors to develop their skills on the green.

“The club’s golf professional Andrew Walkley is doing a great job with the juniors with beginner classes and intermediate to advance classes,” he said.

“We are also working a talent identification program with primary and secondary schools, who offer golf as a school sport.

“We are lucky to have such fantastic facilities at the golf course and such a good professional and it really is a family sport.”
